Meghalaya's chief minister visited local hawkers' markets and distributed a one‑time livelihood grant of ₹20,000 to each vendor as part of a state‑run scheme.
Shillong, Meghalaya – The state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, made a surprise visit to several hawkers' markets across the region on Tuesday. During the tour, the CM handed out a cash grant of ₹20,000 to each vendor, citing the need to support informal sector workers whose earnings have been hit by recent economic pressures.
The distribution was carried out in the presence of local officials and market association leaders, who confirmed that the funds are part of a broader livelihood‑enhancement programme launched by the state government earlier this year. Recipients were asked to submit a simple declaration of usage, primarily for purchasing inventory, improving stalls, or meeting daily household expenses.
State authorities said the one‑time grant aims to provide immediate relief while longer‑term measures such as skill training and credit facilities are being finalised. The initiative reflects the government's focus on inclusive growth for small traders in the North‑East.
The CM reiterated his commitment to regular engagement with street vendors, urging them to voice concerns and participate in future policy dialogues. The grants are expected to be disbursed to approximately 1,200 hawkers over the next few weeks.
