The Meghalaya BJP has reported that several sitting MLAs from rival parties have expressed a desire to join its ranks, but the party says the numbers are not enough to form a stable government.
The Meghalaya BJP spokesperson announced at a press conference that a number of sitting MLAs from the Indian National Congress, the All India Trinamool Congress and the National People's Party have approached the BJP expressing interest in joining its ranks.
While the party welcomed the overtures, it cautioned that the number of MLAs willing to switch is insufficient to secure a majority in the 60‑seat assembly.
The BJP, which secured 12 seats in the 2023 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly elections, has been actively seeking alliances to form a government.
The party remains open to negotiations but stresses that any coalition must meet the constitutional requirement of a simple majority to govern.
