Meghalaya Assembly Urges Labour Dept to Secure Jobs for ITI Graduates

The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly committee held a session today and directed the state Labour Department to devise and implement measures that guarantee employment for graduates of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). The committee highlighted the growing number of ITI students completing their vocational training and the urgent need to translate their skills into job placements.

Representatives from the committee emphasized that vocational training should not end with a certificate; it must lead to sustainable livelihoods. They urged the Labour Department to collaborate with local industries, promote apprenticeship schemes, and create a database of job vacancies tailored to ITI skill sets.

The committee also requested regular monitoring of job placement rates and the establishment of a dedicated liaison office within the Labour Department to assist ITI graduates in finding suitable employment. The move follows concerns that many ITI graduates face a gap between training and job market demands.

The Labour Department has yet to respond publicly to the committee’s directives, but officials are expected to review the proposals and outline an action plan in the coming weeks.
