The Meghalaya government has named nodal officers to facilitate movement of passengers traveling to Assam, a step aimed at mitigating disruptions caused by the ongoing border stalemate with the neighboring state.

The long‑running border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam has periodically halted regular bus and private vehicle services, leaving commuters stranded and trade flows disrupted. Recent tensions escalated after both states disputed the demarcation of several villages, prompting security checks that slowed or stopped cross‑border movement.

In response, the Meghalaya administration announced the appointment of dedicated nodal officers at key entry points. These officials, drawn from the state’s transport and police departments, will coordinate with their Assam counterparts to clear vehicles, verify documents and address grievances of travelers on a real‑time basis.

State officials said the move is intended to provide a single point of contact for commuters, reduce bureaucratic delays and restore confidence among daily wage earners and traders who rely on the Assam route. While the broader border impasse remains unresolved, authorities expect the new mechanism to smooth travel until a permanent settlement is reached.
