A recent inspection by the Meghalaya Pollution Control Board revealed that 28 of 37 industries in Byrnihat are violating environmental norms.
The Meghalaya Pollution Control Board conducted a comprehensive audit of industrial units in the town of Byrnihat, located in the West Garo Hills district. The audit, carried out over a week, examined effluent discharge practices, waste management and compliance with the state’s environmental regulations. The findings showed that 28 of the 37 registered factories failed to meet the prescribed limits for pollutants such as biochemical oxygen demand and heavy metals.
The violations ranged from discharging untreated wastewater into nearby water bodies to exceeding permissible emission levels of particulate matter. Several units were also found lacking proper effluent treatment plants, a mandatory requirement under the state’s industrial pollution control rules.
In response, the board has issued notices to the non‑compliant firms, demanding corrective action within a stipulated timeframe. Failure to comply could lead to fines, suspension of operating licenses or even closure of the offending facilities.
