Around midnight on Sunday, a traditional Mata Ambe procession left Shri Siddhanath Mahadev Temple in Khargone, with the deity holding a burning khappar and a sword, attracting roughly 5,000 devotees.

The historic 408-year-old ritual of Mata Ambe’s procession was observed late Sunday night in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh. From the steps of Shri Siddhanath Mahadev Temple, the deity’s representation emerged carrying a flaming khappar in one hand and a sword in the other, symbols traditionally associated with protection and divine power.

Organisers said the ceremony follows a centuries‑old schedule that marks the deity’s nightly journey through the town, a practice that has been maintained without interruption for over four centuries. The burning khappar, a metal vessel filled with fire, is lit at the temple’s sanctum and carried aloft as a sign of auspiciousness, while the sword signifies the goddess’s role as a warrior.

Crowds gathered along the route, with estimates of about five thousand devotees watching the spectacle. Many pilgrims reported a sense of reverence and communal pride, noting that the event reinforces local cultural identity and religious devotion. The procession concluded back at the temple after a brief circuit of the surrounding streets, where further prayers were offered.

Local authorities coordinated traffic management and ensured safety measures for the large gathering, allowing the traditional observance to proceed smoothly. The event underscores Khargone’s status as a focal point for regional religious festivals in central India.
