Manipur to Offer ₹10,000 Annual Incentive for Owners of Endangered Meitei Pony

The Manipur government announced a scheme to pay ₹10,000 per year to owners who register and care for the endangered Meitei pony, while its mobile veterinary unit has already treated 7,200 cases this year.
Manipur's Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services unveiled a new incentive programme aimed at conserving the state’s native Meitei pony, a breed listed as endangered. Under the scheme, each registered pony owner will receive an annual payment of ₹10,000, provided the animal is maintained in good health and breeding standards are followed.
Eligibility requires owners to register their ponies with the department, submit health records and allow periodic inspections. The cash incentive is intended to offset the cost of feed, shelter and veterinary care, encouraging more breeders to keep the breed alive.
The same department highlighted the performance of its mobile veterinary fleet, which has attended to 7,200 animal health cases across Manipur since the start of the fiscal year. The fleet, equipped with diagnostic tools and medicines, visits remote villages to treat livestock, including the Meitei pony.
Officials said the combined approach of financial support and on‑site veterinary services is expected to improve survival rates and boost breeding numbers, helping the pony regain its ecological and cultural significance in the region.
The scheme will be reviewed annually, with the first disbursement slated for the upcoming financial quarter, pending verification of compliance by the registered owners.
