The Manipur government has announced its readiness to conduct a National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise within a legal framework, as stated by the Home Minister.

The Manipur Home Minister has confirmed that the state government is prepared to carry out a National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise under a clear legal framework. The announcement came during a press briefing where officials outlined the steps that will be taken to ensure the process is transparent and compliant with existing laws.

The NRC is a nationwide initiative aimed at identifying genuine citizens and distinguishing them from illegal immigrants. In Manipur, the exercise will involve collecting biometric and demographic data from residents across all districts.

Officials emphasized that the legal framework will provide safeguards against arbitrary actions and will include provisions for appeals and grievance redressal. The state has also pledged to cooperate with central authorities and civil society organisations to maintain the integrity of the exercise.

While the exact timeline for the NRC rollout has not been disclosed, the government has indicated that it will commence in the coming months, following the completion of preparatory work and stakeholder consultations.
