The Chief Minister launched a new registration scheme aimed at documenting and conserving the state's indigenous ponies.

The Chief Minister of Manipur officially launched a pony registration system today, marking the first organized effort to catalogue the region's native ponies. The scheme is designed to create a comprehensive database of owners and animals, facilitating better management and conservation of the breed, which holds cultural and economic significance in the state.

Officials said the registration will be voluntary initially, with incentives such as subsidised veterinary care and breeding support for participants. The system will be digitised, allowing owners to obtain registration certificates through an online portal, while field officers will conduct verification drives in rural areas.

The move comes amid concerns that the indigenous pony population is declining due to habitat loss and lack of systematic record‑keeping. By formalising ownership records, the government hopes to curb illegal trade and promote sustainable breeding practices.

Stakeholders, including local farmers and equine enthusiasts, welcomed the initiative, noting that it could open avenues for financial assistance and improve the breed's visibility in tourism and sports.

The registration drive is slated to begin next month, with a target of enrolling at least 5,000 ponies within the first year.
