Manipur's Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has drawn attention to a Rs 1,200 crore shortfall in state GST receipts, urging swift measures to revive an economy hit by widespread strikes.
The Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, has brought to light a significant shortfall of Rs 1,200 crore in the state’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for the latest fiscal period. The figure, according to official data released by the state revenue department, marks a steep decline compared to the previous year.
Singh attributed the drop to the extensive bandh (strike) that disrupted commerce across the state, citing a sharp reduction in taxable transactions and a slowdown in business activity. The bandh, which saw major transport and retail hubs shut down, has left many businesses struggling to meet their tax obligations.
In a statement, the CM called for urgent policy interventions to restore confidence among traders and investors. He urged the state government to streamline GST filing processes and to offer temporary relief measures for small and medium enterprises affected by the strike.
The CM also emphasized that a robust recovery plan is essential to prevent further erosion of the state’s fiscal health. He pledged that the government would work closely with the central authorities to secure additional support for the impacted sectors.
