A shallow earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Mangan district of Sikkim early on Tuesday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey. The tremor was felt for a few seconds across nearby villages, but there were no immediate alerts of structural damage.
The Indian Meteorological Department confirmed the event, noting a focal depth of around 10 kilometres, which is typical for low‑to‑moderate quakes in the Himalayan region. No aftershocks of comparable strength have been reported so far.
Local authorities and disaster response teams were placed on standby, but officials said there were no injuries or casualties. Residents were advised to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and report any unusual activity to the nearest police station.
