Man Holds Lift Passenger Hostage, Extorts ₹27,000 and Flees in Brezza in Mohali

A driver in Mohali allegedly detained a passenger after offering a lift, forced him to pay ₹27,000 and escaped in a Maruti Brezza, police say.
Mohali police have opened an investigation after a reported incident in which a driver allegedly turned a routine lift into a hostage situation. According to the complaint, the driver detained the passenger, demanded a payment of ₹27,000 and subsequently fled the scene using a Maruti Brezza.
The victim, who chose not to disclose his identity, said he was offered a ride and then forced to hand over cash under threat. The driver is believed to have taken the Brezza and escaped from the area shortly after the extortion.
Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from nearby streets and have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the suspect's arrest. The case is being treated as a serious criminal offense under sections dealing with kidnapping and extortion.
Police have urged commuters to exercise caution when accepting rides from unknown drivers and to report any suspicious behavior promptly.
