Police in Mohali have arrested a suspect who allegedly scammed a buyer of ₹1 lakh by advertising a buffalo for sale on Facebook.
Mohali police announced on Monday that they have detained a man accused of defrauding a local resident of ₹1 lakh. The alleged fraudster posted an advertisement on Facebook claiming to sell a healthy buffalo, collected the full payment in advance, and then disappeared without delivering the animal.
According to the investigation report obtained from Amar Ujala, the victim had communicated with the seller through Facebook messenger, received photographs of the buffalo, and was assured of a quick handover. After transferring the money via bank transfer, the buyer was left with no contact and the posted advertisement was removed.
Authorities have registered a criminal case under sections relating to cheating and cyber fraud. The police are now tracing the digital footprints of the suspect and have appealed to the public for any additional information that could aid the probe.
The incident highlights the growing risk of online scams in rural and semi‑urban markets, where social media platforms are increasingly used for livestock trade. Officials warned citizens to verify sellers through official channels and to avoid cash or direct bank transfers without proper documentation.
The case is being handled by the Mohali cybercrime cell, and further legal action will follow based on the evidence gathered.
