A student from Maharashtra lost Rs 2.4 lakh after falling for a fraudulent rental listing while seeking accommodation in Germany.

A student from Maharashtra, who was looking for a place to stay in Germany, became a victim of an online rental fraud. The fraudster posed as a landlord and secured a payment of Rs 2.4 lakh from the student for a non‑existent property. The transaction was made through a digital payment channel, after which the fake landlord disappeared.

The loss was reported to local authorities in Germany as well as to Indian law enforcement agencies. Officials have advised students and other overseas travelers to verify the authenticity of rental listings, use reputable platforms, and avoid direct bank transfers to unknown individuals.

The incident highlights the growing risk of cross‑border scams targeting Indian students seeking education and accommodation abroad. Authorities are urging potential victims to report similar cases promptly to aid investigations and prevent further fraud.

No arrests have been made yet, and the student is currently seeking legal recourse to recover the amount.
