The state government has delayed cooperative society polls in 304 talukas hit by drought to channel administrative effort towards relief measures.

The Maharashtra cabinet announced on Thursday that the scheduled elections for cooperative societies in 304 talukas severely affected by drought will be postponed. Officials said the move is intended to free up administrative resources and funds for emergency water supply, food distribution and other relief activities.

The polls, which were to be held later this year, will be rescheduled after the monsoon season, although no new date has been fixed. The government assured that the tenure of existing society bodies will continue until fresh elections are conducted.

By delaying the voting process, the state aims to avoid diverting attention from its drought‑mitigation plan. While opposition leaders welcomed the focus on relief, they urged the administration to restore the democratic schedule promptly.
