Maharashtra Onion Prices Dip Below Production Cost, Government Reports to Lok Sabha

✍️ Hindustan Times 🗓 22 Jul 2026, 07:04 PM 👁 1

The government informed the Lok Sabha that onion prices in Maharashtra have fallen below the cost of production, raising concerns over farmer losses.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare presented a brief to the Lok Sabha on Thursday, noting that the market price of onions in Maharashtra has slipped below the average cost of production.

The report highlighted that the price decline has intensified financial pressure on farmers, many of whom rely on onion cultivation as a primary source of income.

Officials cited a combination of factors, including surplus supply and fluctuating demand, as contributing to the price drop. They also mentioned ongoing measures to support farmers, such as price stabilization schemes and procurement initiatives.

The Lok Sabha session ended with a call for further discussion on ensuring fair prices for produce and safeguarding farmer livelihoods.
