Maharashtra police have invoked the MCOCA law against 11 individuals linked to an illegal abortion network, marking the first such use of the act in the state.
Maharashtra law enforcement invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against 11 persons alleged to be part of an illegal abortion network, the first time the statute has been used for such a case in the state.
The investigation revealed that the racket operated across several districts, offering clandestine abortion services for a fee and violating the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act. Police said they uncovered evidence of organised procurement of drugs, recruitment of medical staff and transport of clients.
All 11 suspects have been arrested, equipment seized and charges filed under MCOCA, which allows for harsher penalties and special courts. The move signals a tougher stance against organised crime in the health sector.
Legal experts note that invoking MCOCA requires proof of organised criminal activity, and the case will test the law's applicability to illegal medical services. The state government has not issued further comment.
