The Maharashtra government has approved the direct induction of 250 former Agniveers into the state’s coastal police force, bypassing the usual recruitment examination.

Mumbai, Oct 24 2026 – The Maharashtra government announced that 250 ex‑Agniveers will be absorbed into the state’s coastal police cadre without undergoing the standard recruitment test. The decision, disclosed by the Home Department, aims to utilize the training and discipline of former army personnel for maritime security duties.

According to the circular, the ex‑Agniveers will be posted as constables after completing a short orientation program specific to coastal policing. Their induction is scheduled to begin next month, with placements across key coastal districts such as Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

State officials said the move addresses the shortage of manpower in the coastal police and provides immediate employment to the Agniveers who completed their one‑year service term. No additional selection criteria or written exams will be applied, as the government considers their prior military training sufficient for the role.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions; while veteran groups welcomed the job opportunity, some opposition leaders questioned the bypassing of the regular recruitment process. The Home Department affirmed that the policy complies with existing state employment rules.
