Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the Maharashtra cabinet will introduce a Uniform Civil Code Bill during the state's upcoming winter legislative session.

In a media briefing, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that the state government intends to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the winter session of the state legislature. The announcement was made as the cabinet finalised the draft for presentation.

The move places Maharashtra among the few states that have formally proposed a UCC legislation, a subject that has long been debated at the national level. The bill aims to provide a common set of personal laws for all citizens, superseding religion‑based statutes in matters such as marriage, divorce and inheritance.

If tabled, the bill will be debated by legislators in the upcoming session, after which it may be sent to the Governor for assent. The government indicated that it will seek broader consensus from political parties and civil society before finalising the text.

The announcement underscores the state’s intent to address legal uniformity and could influence the broader national discourse on the Uniform Civil Code.
