The Maharashtra state administration and the Taj Group of Hotels have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop tourism infrastructure at Shiroda‑Velagar in Sindhudurg district.
Maharashtra’s tourism department and the Taj Group of Hotels formalised a partnership on Thursday by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing the tourism potential of Shiroda‑Velagar in Sindhudurg district. The agreement outlines a joint effort to develop hospitality facilities, improve connectivity and promote the coastal region as a premium destination for domestic and international travellers.
Under the MoU, the Taj Group will bring its expertise in luxury hotel management and branding, while the state government will facilitate land allocation, regulatory clearances and infrastructure support such as road upgrades and water supply. Both parties intend to launch pilot projects within the next twelve months, subject to detailed feasibility studies.
The initiative aligns with Maharashtra’s broader strategy to diversify its tourism offerings beyond the traditional hotspots of Mumbai and Pune, focusing on lesser‑known coastal belts that boast pristine beaches and cultural heritage. Officials anticipate that the development will generate employment opportunities for local communities and boost ancillary sectors such as transport, food services and handicrafts.
Stakeholders from the tourism ministry, the Taj Group’s senior management and local representatives attended the signing ceremony in Mumbai, emphasizing a shared commitment to sustainable and inclusive growth in the region.
