The Maharashtra Forest Department centered this year’s Wildlife Week on creating and protecting wildlife corridors to improve habitat connectivity across the state.
Mumbai – As part of the 2026 Wildlife Week, the Maharashtra Forest Department placed wildlife corridors and habitat connectivity at the core of its programme. Officials organised a series of seminars, field demonstrations and community outreach activities aimed at showcasing the importance of linking fragmented forest patches.
The department highlighted ongoing projects that restore natural pathways between protected areas such as Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve and surrounding forest fragments. By facilitating animal movement, these corridors are expected to reduce human‑wildlife conflict and bolster genetic diversity among species.
Stakeholders, including local NGOs, forest officers and village representatives, participated in workshops that discussed land‑use planning, the role of indigenous knowledge and the need for sustainable development practices. The department also announced plans to monitor corridor usage through camera traps and GPS tagging in the coming months.
The initiative aligns with national biodiversity goals and underscores Maharashtra’s commitment to preserving its rich wildlife heritage while balancing developmental pressures.
