Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed the state Food and Drug Administration to prepare standard operating procedures aimed at curbing adulteration in edible oils across Maharashtra.

In a recent directive, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asked the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to formulate detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) that will help prevent adulteration of edible oils. The order underscores the government's focus on safeguarding consumer health and ensuring market integrity for a staple commodity.

Adulterated edible oil, often mixed with cheaper or harmful substances, has been a recurring concern in the state, prompting complaints from consumers and periodic market inspections. By establishing clear SOPs, the FDA aims to standardise testing protocols, enforce stricter penalties, and improve traceability throughout the supply chain.

The FDA has been tasked with drafting the SOPs within a stipulated period and submitting them to the CM's office for approval. Once finalised, the procedures will be communicated to oil manufacturers, distributors and retailers, with regular audits planned to monitor compliance.

Officials expect the new guidelines to reduce incidents of sub‑standard oil reaching households, thereby protecting public health and restoring confidence in locally produced edible oil brands.
