The state cabinet approved a proposal to install directors in several large cooperative societies, prompting opposition parties to claim the decision favours particular interests.

Earlier this week, the Maharashtra cabinet gave the green light to a long‑pending proposal that would place new directors on the boards of a number of the state’s largest cooperative societies. The move is intended to streamline governance and address alleged managerial lapses in these entities, which play a crucial role in sectors such as agriculture, credit and housing.

The cooperatives targeted by the decision include several that manage substantial assets and serve millions of members across the state. By appointing directors directly, the government aims to ensure greater accountability and align the societies’ operations with broader development goals.

Opposition leaders, however, have denounced the clearance as a politically motivated maneuver. They argue that the appointments could be used to reward loyalists, pointing to the involvement of a figure known as Gokul in the selection process. The criticism underscores the broader tension between the ruling party’s reform agenda and the opposition’s concerns over patronage.

Analysts note that while the decision may bring short‑term administrative benefits, its long‑term impact will depend on how transparently the appointed directors operate and whether the process withstands legal and political scrutiny.
