Chief Minister Majhi announced that negotiations over the Mahanadi water‑sharing dispute are advancing towards a resolution.

Chief Minister Majhi said on Thursday that the long‑standing dispute over the sharing of Mahanadi river water between the states is moving closer to a settlement. He highlighted that recent rounds of talks involving senior officials from the concerned states have produced a framework that could be presented for final approval.

The Mahanadi, which flows through Chhattisgarh and Odisha before emptying into the Bay of Bengal, has been a source of contention for years, with both states seeking greater allocations for irrigation, drinking water and industrial use. Majhi emphasized that a fair resolution would boost agricultural productivity and support the livelihoods of millions dependent on the river.

While the exact terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, the chief minister assured that the state government will continue to engage constructively with its neighbours to ensure a durable and mutually beneficial outcome.

The announcement comes as both states face increasing pressure to manage water resources amid erratic monsoon patterns and growing demand from urban and rural sectors.
