Madurai Mango Farmers Face Crisis as Prices Plummet to Rs 3/Kg

Mango farmers in Madurai are witnessing significant losses as market prices for their produce have fallen drastically to Rs 3 per kilogram, far below production costs. They are demanding a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 20 per kg.

Farmers in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, are facing a severe economic crisis as the wholesale price of mangoes has collapsed to as low as Rs 3 per kilogram. This drastic drop means farmers are unable to recover their cultivation expenses and labour charges, leading to a substantial portion of their harvest being left to rot.

The crisis affects agricultural land spanning over a thousand acres in the Madurai region. The current market rate is significantly lower than the cost incurred for production and labour, pushing farmers into distress. They are advocating for government intervention, demanding a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 20 per kg to ensure a viable livelihood.

Adding to the farmers' woes, the same mangoes are being retailed at over Rs 40 per kilogram, exposing a vast disparity between the price received by the growers and the final cost to consumers. This situation highlights a critical issue within the agricultural supply chain affecting the livelihoods of fruit growers.
