Madhya Pradesh has announced plans to excavate a 2,200‑year‑old Buddhist stupa in Ujjain. The stupa is said to be three times the size of the famous Sanchi Stupa, making it one of the largest stupas in India.

The project, which will be overseen by the state's archaeology department, aims to uncover the monument’s foundations and any relics that may shed light on the region’s early Buddhist history.

Experts believe the excavation could reveal new insights into the spread of Buddhism in central India during the Mauryan and Gupta periods. The state has allocated funds for the dig and plans to involve local universities in the research.

The stupa’s location in Ujjain, a city known for its ancient temples and as a major pilgrimage site, adds to the cultural significance of the find. The excavation is expected to begin later this year.
