A probe has been launched after large discrepancies were found in the purchase prices of waste collection vehicles, LED lights and disinfectants by municipal authorities in Madhya Pradesh.

An audit of procurement records in several urban local bodies of Madhya Pradesh has revealed stark variations in the costs of essential supplies. While some municipalities paid as low as INR 2 lakh for a waste collection vehicle, others recorded payments of up to INR 6 lakh for a similar unit, raising questions about the transparency of the tender process.

The irregularities are not limited to waste vehicles; the same review highlighted inconsistent pricing for LED street lights and disinfectants, suggesting a broader pattern of procurement anomalies. Officials from the state’s finance department have said the findings warrant a detailed investigation to determine whether procedural lapses or possible malpractices occurred.

The state government has ordered a forensic audit of the contracts and has asked the municipal corporations to submit all related documents within the next two weeks. Meanwhile, opposition parties have demanded a legislative inquiry, citing the need for accountability in public spending.

If the probe confirms irregularities, the authorities could recommend corrective actions, including the cancellation of contracts, recovery of excess funds, and possible disciplinary measures against officials involved. The outcome is expected to shape future procurement guidelines for urban bodies across the state.

The issue has also drawn public attention to the broader challenges of ensuring fair pricing and transparency in government purchases, especially in the wake of increased spending on sanitation and public health infrastructure.
