After three days of protests, Madhya Pradesh agreed to raise the monthly stipend for intern doctors from ₹14,337 to ₹21,500.
Madhya Pradesh health authorities announced a revision of the monthly stipend for intern doctors, increasing it from the previous ₹14,337 to ₹21,500. The decision comes after a three‑day sit‑in by the interns demanding better financial support and working conditions.
The protest, which began on Monday, saw dozens of intern doctors gather outside the state health department, halting routine services in several hospitals. Negotiations between the interns' representatives and the state government led to a consensus, prompting the doctors to call off the strike.
While the stipend hike addresses the primary demand, officials said investigations are ongoing into allegations of water‑cannon use and possible lathi charges during the demonstrations. The inquiries will determine whether force was employed unlawfully.
The new stipend is expected to be disbursed from the next payroll cycle, providing immediate relief to the interns who form the backbone of the state's primary health care delivery.
The government reiterated its commitment to improving working conditions for medical trainees and urged other states to consider similar measures.
