The state’s Food Safety Department confiscated 11.73 lakh kg of suspect food products worth ₹5.61 crore between July 20 and August 25, exposing adulteration in 25 ghee brands and a 166‑kg milk‑cake batch from Nagpur.

The Food Safety Department of Madhya Pradesh reported a large‑scale seizure of adulterated food items over a five‑week period starting 20 July. Officials confiscated approximately 11.73 lakh kilograms of suspect material, valued at about ₹5.61 crore.

Laboratory tests on the seized stock revealed that 25 different ghee brands failed safety standards, indicating the presence of non‑permitted additives and sub‑standard fat content. In addition, a batch of milk cake weighing 166 kg, supplied from Nagpur, was found to be non‑compliant with prescribed quality norms.

The department has initiated legal proceedings against the manufacturers and distributors involved, and the confiscated goods will be destroyed under supervision. Authorities emphasized that the operation is part of a pre‑festival crackdown to protect consumers from health hazards associated with food adulteration.

Officials said the coordinated raids across multiple districts demonstrate the state’s commitment to enforcing the Food Safety and Standards Act, especially as demand for festive sweets and dairy products rises.

The seizure underscores the ongoing challenge of curbing food fraud in India and serves as a warning to producers that non‑compliance will attract swift punitive action.
