In Saepara village of Tikamgarh district, an elderly man’s funeral was conducted on a plastic sheet during a rainstorm, highlighting the village’s long‑standing lack of a proper muktidham.
On Friday, heavy rains fell over Saepara village in the Palera tehsil of Tikamgarh district, Madhya Pradesh. An elderly resident’s funeral was carried out on a plastic sheet, as the village had no dedicated muktidham for burial rites.
The rain turned the ground into a muddy quagmire, making it impossible to dig a grave. Local mourners had to improvise, laying the deceased on a plastic sheet and performing the rites in the open air.
Saepara has long awaited the construction of a muktidham, a communal burial ground mandated by state law. Despite repeated appeals, the project has stalled, leaving residents to rely on makeshift arrangements during funerals.
Community members expressed frustration, noting that the lack of a proper burial site hampers dignified ceremonies and poses health risks. The incident has reignited calls for the government to expedite the muktidham project in the village.
