After the High Court upheld a 27% OBC reservation, BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal accused the Congress of a legal misstep in the 2019 decision.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court recently affirmed the state's 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC), a policy first expanded in 2019. The judgment, delivered amid ongoing debates over affirmative action, confirms that the reservation quota remains constitutionally valid.
Speaking shortly after the verdict, Hemant Khandelwal, president of the state BJP unit, directed criticism at the Congress party, alleging that the opposition made a "legal error" when it supported the 2019 reservation increase. Khandelwal reiterated the party's commitment to the 27% quota, framing it as a promise to the OBC community.
The BJP's remarks come as both parties vie for the support of OBC voters ahead of upcoming state elections. While the court's decision settles the legal question for now, political leaders are likely to continue using the reservation issue to mobilise their bases.
