The Madhya Pradesh government announced it will follow the Tamil Nadu‑Kerala approach and provide an Ayush Janani Kit to pregnant women under the National Health Mission to bring down maternal and infant mortality.

The state health department said Madhya Pradesh will replicate the successful Tamil Nadu‑Kerala framework that has lowered maternal and infant deaths in those states. The move comes as the state seeks to accelerate progress toward the national targets for maternal‑infant health.

Under the new scheme, every woman identified as pregnant will receive an Ayush Janani Kit, a package of essential nutrition supplements, hygiene items and information leaflets on prenatal care. Distribution will be coordinated through the National Health Mission’s existing network of sub‑centres and primary health centres, with kits handed out during the first trimester.

Officials expect the intervention to improve early‑stage health indicators and ultimately cut the maternal mortality ratio in Madhya Pradesh. The health department will monitor outcomes through routine data collection and plan to expand the programme statewide by the end of the fiscal year.
