Air quality in Lucknow hit its peak on Diwali, with the AQI reaching hazardous levels, prompting health advisories from state authorities.

Lucknow registered its highest Air Quality Index (AQI) reading on Diwali, according to data released by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board. The AQI surged to a hazardous level, far exceeding the safe limit recommended by the National Air Quality Guidelines.

The spike was attributed to the extensive use of firecrackers across the city, combined with stagnant weather conditions that prevented the dispersion of pollutants. Officials noted that particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) concentrations were the primary contributors to the deteriorated air quality.

Health officials issued immediate advisories, urging residents, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory ailments, to stay indoors, limit outdoor activities, and use masks if they must venture outside. Hospitals reported a rise in complaints of breathing difficulties and eye irritation following the celebrations.

The state government has announced plans to intensify monitoring during future festivals and to promote the use of eco‑friendly fireworks. Authorities also urged citizens to adopt alternative celebration methods to mitigate health risks and environmental impact.
