Students at Lovely Professional University began a protest on Saturday after a rumor of a rape involving a female student spread across campus. The demonstration escalated when several vehicles parked on campus were set ablaze. Police were called to restore order and a clash ensued between law enforcement and the demonstrators.
Senior Superintendent of Police Harvinder Singh Virk reported that a number of police officers sustained injuries during the confrontation. In response to the unrest, the university administration announced that the campus would remain closed for ten days.
