Left parties in Tamil Nadu have declined to back former minister Tirumagan TVK, who will now contest the upcoming bypolls independently.

The upcoming Tamil Nadu bypolls, scheduled for early September, will see former DMK minister Tirumagan TVK contesting a seat in the state assembly without any party backing.

TVK, who resigned from the DMK in 2021, has been campaigning as an independent candidate in the Tiruvallur constituency. His decision to run solo comes after the Communist Party of India (CPI) and CPI (M) announced they would not extend their support.

The left parties cited ideological differences and concerns over TVK’s past alliances as reasons for their refusal. They have instead chosen to field their own candidates in the bypolls.

TVK’s independent run is expected to split the anti-incumbent vote, potentially benefiting the ruling party. Political analysts warn that the lack of a united front could alter the outcome of the election.
