Heavy landslides have blocked the Siliguri‑Gangtok highway, halting traffic between West Bengal and Sikkim and prompting emergency response teams to clear the debris.

Heavy rains in the hills have triggered a series of landslides that have blocked the Siliguri‑Gangtok highway, a key artery linking West Bengal with Sikkim. The debris has halted traffic on the 40‑kilometre stretch, forcing commuters to seek alternate routes.

Emergency teams from the West Bengal State Police, Sikkim Police and the local forest department were dispatched to the site. They worked through the night to clear the road, removing boulders and compacted soil that had fallen from the surrounding slopes.

Transport officials have advised motorists to avoid the route until the highway is fully cleared. The authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as the road is reopened.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of the region’s infrastructure to heavy monsoon rainfall, a recurring challenge for the Siliguri corridor.
