Residents of seven villages in Arunachal Pradesh have turned down NEEPCO’s proposal to build the Naying hydroelectric plant, citing concerns over land acquisition and livelihood impacts.
North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) sought to develop the Naying hydroelectric project in Arunachal Pradesh. The proposal required acquiring land from seven villages situated near the Naying river basin.
Representatives of the villages met and collectively rejected the project, stating that the proposed land acquisition would disrupt agricultural activities and displace families. They also raised concerns about potential environmental damage to the river ecosystem.
The refusal puts the project on hold, forcing NEEPCO to revisit its plans and engage further with the local community. Officials indicated that any future proposal would need to address the landowners' grievances and comply with state regulations.
If unresolved, the delay could affect the expected power generation capacity slated for the region, which was projected to contribute to the state's renewable energy targets.
