The Jammu & Kashmir High Court will open its first bench in Ladakh, marking the first judicial presence in the Union Territory since the court’s inception nearly a century ago.

The Jammu & Kashmir High Court announced the establishment of a permanent bench in Ladakh, a Union Territory that has long relied on distant courts for higher‑level adjudication. The decision comes almost a hundred years after the High Court itself was created in 1921, filling a long‑standing gap in the region’s judicial infrastructure.

Officials said the new bench will be located in the capital city of Leh and will handle civil, criminal and family matters arising within Ladakh. It is expected to reduce the time and expense for litigants who previously had to travel to Srinagar or Jammu for hearings.

The move has been welcomed by local leaders and legal practitioners, who view it as a step toward greater administrative parity for Ladakh following its elevation to Union Territory status in 2019. The bench is slated to become operational later this year, pending the appointment of a resident judge and the completion of necessary facilities.

The High Court’s expansion reflects a broader effort by the central and territorial governments to strengthen the rule of law in remote regions, ensuring that citizens have timely access to justice.
