Vijay Ahirwar, a daily‑wage worker from Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, died after consuming salt in protest over five years of unpaid wages and alleged harassment.
A 45‑year‑old daily‑wage laborer, Vijay Ahirwar, was found dead in his home in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh, after he allegedly ingested a large amount of salt. Local police confirmed that the cause of death was suicide, triggered by a prolonged dispute over unpaid wages.
According to Ahirwar’s family, the worker had been seeking payment for work performed over the past five years. They claim that despite repeated appeals to his employer, the dues remained unsettled, and Ahirwar faced continuous intimidation and harassment, which left him in severe distress.
The incident has prompted a police inquiry into the alleged harassment and the employer’s failure to pay wages. Labour department officials have been asked to intervene, and the case highlights the broader challenges faced by informal workers in the region, where delayed payments and lack of legal recourse are common.
Local activists have called for stricter enforcement of the Minimum Wages Act and faster resolution of wage disputes, urging authorities to protect vulnerable workers from similar tragedies.
