The Kuki-Zo community organization has criticised the decision to defer the nationwide census in Manipur, warning that the delay could affect demographic data and development planning.

Manipur's Kuki-Zo community body has publicly objected to the government's decision to postpone the 2024 national census in the state. The organization said the deferral undermines the accuracy of demographic data that is essential for resource allocation, political representation and planning of welfare schemes.

Representatives of the Kuki-Zo group met with state officials to convey their concerns, emphasizing that timely enumeration is crucial for the community's visibility in official statistics. They warned that repeated delays could skew population figures and affect the state's entitlement to central funds.

The census, originally scheduled for early 2024, has been pushed back amid logistical challenges and security concerns in the northeastern region. While authorities cite these reasons, the Kuki-Zo body insists that the postponement disproportionately impacts minority groups that rely on precise data for affirmative action and development programs.

The state government has not yet issued a detailed response to the community's objections, but officials have indicated that the census will be rescheduled once conditions permit a safe and comprehensive enumeration process.
