The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has announced a new delimitation exercise that will redefine ward boundaries ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.

The KMC has unveiled a comprehensive delimitation plan that will redraw the boundaries of its 144 wards to reflect demographic changes reported in the 2021 census. The exercise, which is expected to be completed by March 2024, aims to ensure equal representation for residents across the city. Officials say the new map will address disparities where some wards have seen significant population growth while others have declined. The delimitation process will be overseen by a committee appointed by the West Bengal government and will involve public consultations.

The move comes as the state prepares for the 2025 municipal elections, with political parties keen to secure a favorable ward structure. Analysts note that the redrawing of boundaries could influence voting patterns, especially in densely populated areas such as Salt Lake and Ballygunge. The KMC has also pledged to make the delimitation data available online to promote transparency.

While the delimitation is a key focus, the KMC has also announced measures to improve civic amenities, including waste management and street lighting, as part of its broader urban development agenda.
