Killai village in Tamil Nadu has completed a climate‑resilience project that restores a canal, plants mangroves, installs solar power in public buildings and introduces an electric boat, setting a template for other coastal settlements.
Killai, a coastal hamlet in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam district, has officially become the country's first fully operational climate‑resilient village. The project, driven by local authorities and community groups, focused on reviving a deteriorating canal and lining its banks with newly planted mangrove saplings to act as a natural barrier against storm surges.
In parallel, the village upgraded its public infrastructure with solar panels, supplying clean electricity to schools, health centres and the panchayat office. An electric boat, powered by the same solar network, now ferries residents across the canal, reducing reliance on diesel engines and cutting emissions.
