The 8th Pay Commission has outlined five major changes from the 7th Pay Commission that will reshape government salaries and allowances.

New Delhi – The Government of India’s 8th Pay Commission has released a summary of five pivotal reforms that differ from the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission. These reforms target the structure of basic pay, grade pay, dearness allowance, pension calculations and other allowances for central government employees.

The commission, set up under the Ministry of Finance, aims to modernise compensation to reflect inflation trends, cost‑of‑living changes and evolving job responsibilities. By revisiting the pay matrix, it seeks to bring greater parity across services while ensuring fiscal prudence.

Stakeholders, including employee unions and policy analysts, have been invited to review the draft proposals before the final report is submitted to the Cabinet. Once approved, the changes are expected to be implemented in the upcoming financial year, affecting millions of civil servants across the country.

The five key changes, though not detailed in this brief, are anticipated to influence salary progression, retirement benefits and the overall compensation framework for government personnel.

The commission’s recommendations will undergo parliamentary scrutiny before becoming law, marking a significant step in the periodic review of public sector remuneration.
