The Kerala government has reversed its earlier stance on conducting a study into the practice of triple talaq, following criticism from civil society groups.
The Kerala government had announced plans to commission a study on the practice of triple talaq in the Malappuram district, a move that was intended to assess the impact of the 2019 Supreme Court ruling that declared the practice unconstitutional.
The proposal faced swift backlash from civil society organizations and legal experts who argued that a study could undermine the legal safeguards already in place. In response to mounting pressure, the state government withdrew the announcement and announced that it would not pursue the study.
Officials said the decision was taken after consultations with stakeholders and that the government would continue to support the enforcement of the existing law against triple talaq across Kerala.
