Following a wave of public complaints, Kerala's consumer affairs department has directed cinema owners to lower popcorn prices deemed excessive.
Kerala's Department of Consumer Affairs announced on Monday that it will enforce stricter price controls on popcorn sold inside movie theatres after receiving numerous complaints from movie‑goers about steep charges. The directive instructs all cinema operators in the state to review their snack‑pricing policies and ensure that popcorn rates are aligned with reasonable market values.
The move comes after social media users and consumer advocacy groups highlighted instances where a single serving of popcorn was being sold at prices significantly higher than comparable outlets in the region. Several patrons reported paying more than double the usual rate, prompting the department to intervene.
Authorities said they will conduct spot inspections at theatres across Kerala and will issue warnings or fines to establishments that fail to comply with the new guidelines. The department also urged consumers to report any further instances of price gouging.
