Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan addressed the State Water Commission (SZC) meeting and advocated for the construction of a new Mullaperiyar dam. He highlighted the ageing structure of the existing dam and the growing concerns over its safety and water management.
Vijayan emphasized that a new dam would bolster water availability for both irrigation and drinking purposes across Kerala, while also addressing inter‑state water sharing issues with Tamil Nadu. He noted that the current dam, built in the 1940s, faces structural challenges that could affect downstream communities.
The chief minister urged the state government to expedite feasibility studies, environmental clearances and coordination with central agencies to move the project forward. He assured that the administration would seek all necessary approvals to ensure the dam’s timely construction.
Stakeholders from the water resources department and engineering experts present at the meeting were asked to submit detailed reports within the next month, laying the groundwork for a formal proposal to the central government.
