A veterinarian from Karnataka has used his entire life savings to establish a 600‑tree gene bank aimed at preserving rare mango varieties.

The initiative, led by a local veterinarian, involves planting 600 mango trees that represent some of the rarest varieties found in Karnataka.

The project was financed entirely from the vet’s personal savings, underscoring his commitment to safeguarding the state’s mango heritage.

The gene bank will serve as a living repository, allowing future generations to access and study these unique mango genotypes.

Experts say such efforts are crucial as climate change and market pressures threaten many indigenous fruit varieties.

The bank is expected to open its doors to researchers and farmers in the coming months.
