Karnataka has issued guidelines to collect used cooking oil from hotels and households, directing it to biodiesel plants to promote renewable fuel and waste reduction.

Karnataka state government has released detailed guidelines to set up a systematic collection of used cooking oil (UCO) from commercial kitchens and residential households.

The scheme aims to channel the gathered oil to biodiesel production facilities, thereby reducing waste and supporting the nation’s clean energy objectives.

Authorities will work with hotels, restaurants and local municipalities to install collection points and offer incentives for households that segregate oil.

Officials indicated that the initiative could lower reliance on fossil diesel and generate economic benefits for the waste‑to‑energy sector, although the precise implementation timeline is still being finalised.

The program forms part of Karnataka’s broader environmental strategy and will be overseen by the state’s energy department.
