The Karnataka government has introduced the 'Government First' initiative, the first in India to buy AI‑based solutions directly from startups for administrative and civic services, with work orders of up to ₹25 lakh.

Karnataka has rolled out the 'Government First' initiative, marking the first time in the country that a state government will directly purchase artificial‑intelligence (AI) solutions from startups to address administrative and civic‑service challenges.

Under the scheme, selected innovators will receive direct work orders valued at up to ₹25 lakh, bypassing conventional procurement channels and accelerating the deployment of technology in public functions.

The move is intended to fast‑track digital transformation, improve service delivery to citizens and nurture the local startup ecosystem by providing a clear market for AI‑driven products.

State officials said the programme will focus on leveraging AI to solve real‑world problems faced by government agencies, creating a collaborative platform for startups and the administration.

By pioneering this approach, Karnataka aims to set a benchmark for other Indian states in integrating advanced technology into governance and encouraging home‑grown innovation.
