The state forest department announced a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for trekking and eco‑trail activities in Karnataka's forest reserves. The document outlines mandatory permits, limits on group size, route approvals and mandatory briefings for participants.
Key provisions focus on waste management, prohibition of plastic, and strict penalties for littering or damaging flora and fauna. Guides and trek operators are required to undergo certified training on safety protocols and wildlife awareness before receiving authorization.
Officials said the SOP will be enforced from the beginning of the upcoming trekking season, with regular audits to monitor compliance. The move is intended to curb unregulated trekking, protect vulnerable ecosystems and promote responsible eco‑tourism in the state.
